Someone in a Facebook group I belong to asked the question "Why am I not making money online" and they got some general, helpful advice but that got me thinking. What is the difference that makes a difference?
I know that posting on social media alone does not create sales. You can post every day and still make no money. In fact you can have a large following and not earn a penny from it.
This is one of the most common situations:
- You are consistent
- You are showing up
- You are trying different content
But nothing is happening. Very few clicks. No messages. No sales.
I believe that the issue is not effort. The issue is direction.
Most people are posting without a clear outcome. They are sharing content, but there is no path from that content to a result.
So the pattern becomes:
- Post
- Wait
- Repeat
And over time, frustration builds.
If you have read How to Get Your First Sale Without Building Everything First, you already know that activity does not equal progress. Posting is only useful if it leads somewhere.
Stop Posting Without a Purpose
This is where the problem repeats.
Most people continue posting without changing anything because:
- it feels productive
- it looks like consistency
- it avoids having to think about selling
There is also hesitation around asking for action.
People do not want to:
- seem pushy
- tell others what to do
- include a clear next step
So they remove that part completely. What is left is content with no outcome. That is why months pass without a sale.
This is the shift:
You are not posting to “stay consistent.”
You are posting to move someone closer to a decision.
What stays the same:
- You continue posting regularly
What changes:
- Every post has a role
Instead of asking: “What should I post today?”
You ask: “What should this post lead to?”
This removes randomness.
The One Change That Fixes This
The method is simple:
Every post must have a direction.
Step 1: Decide the Outcome Before You Post
Instead of asking:
“What should I post today?”
You ask:
“What should happen after someone reads this?”
That question changes everything.
Options. Do you want people to:
- click your link
- read another article
- message you
- join something
If you cannot answer this, do not post yet.
Step 2: Build a Clear Path
Your content must lead somewhere.
Example:
- Post → your site
- Site → explanation
- Explanation → action
This is why your blog matters. Articles like How to Get Your First Sale Without Building Everything First give people a clear next step instead of leaving them confused.
Step 3: Add a Simple Call to Action
Do not overcomplicate this. Just tell people what to do next.
Examples:
- “Start here”
- “Read this”
- “Join through the link”
If you do not say it, most people will not take action.
Step 4: Keep the Message Simple
Complicated posts reduce action.
Focus on:
- one idea
- one problem
- one next step
That is enough.
WHY THIS WORKS
People do not take action because content exists. They take action because the next step is clear.
When someone reads your post, they are making a quick decision:
- Do I understand this?
- Does this help me?
- What should I do next?
If that third question is unanswered, they leave.
Not because they are not interested, but because there is no direction.
Clear content works because it reduces effort for the reader.
Instead of thinking: “What does this mean for me?”
They see: “This is what I do next.”
That is what moves someone from:
- reading → clicking
- clicking → exploring
- exploring → deciding
Without that structure, content becomes passive. It is consumed, then forgotten. With that structure, content becomes active. It leads somewhere.
PRACTICAL TASK
Take your last 3 posts.
For each one:
- Add a clear next step
- Link to one article or offer
- Make the outcome obvious
Then continue posting with this structure.
